ravel Deals: AAA July 4th Forecast and Holiday Weekend Getaways, cheap and memorable

Travel Deals: AAA July 4th Forecast and Holiday Weekend Getaways

With the economy still slumping along, fewer Americans are expected to travel this Fourth of July.

The number of travelers is expected to drop 1.9 percent to 37.1 million during the upcoming holiday weekend, compared to 37.8 million last year, according to a forecast released today by AAA, the travel and auto group.

Car travel, which accounts for 88 percent of travel over the busy holiday, is expected to drop by 2.6 percent compared to last year. That’s true despite lower gas prices – average pump prices today are about $2.60 a gallon, compared to $4 last summer.

Air travel, on the other hand, is expected to rise by a modest 4.9 percent during the holiday, thanks to cheaper air fares and pent up demand.

Indeed, last-minute Independence Day deals keep rolling in:

The Greenbrier resort in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, is offering “A Legendary Summer” special rate from $249 a night, good over the Fourth of July– a savings of nearly 50 percent off.

CheapOair.com is offering weekend getaways to Aruba, with two hotels under $100 a night and airfare for about $700 from New York. Book by June 30 for travel between July 3 to July 6 and use the promo code AA15 for $15 off flights.

Through Cheapoair, Club Arias, a four-star hotel in Savaneta, has room rates starting at $99 a night for suite nine. The Brickell Bay Beach Club, a three-star hotel in Oranjestad has a 48-hour sale starting this morning, with rooms from $81.
